Hämeenlinna on
aina ollut vilkas kulttuurikaupunki, jolla on monta ylpeyden aihetta. On jykevä
keskiaikainen linna, jonka käytäviä aatelisto on kulkenut, on useita museoita
ja lahjakkaita urheilijoita. Hämeenlinnassa on
Vihje 3: Hän on säveltäjistämme
kansainvälisesti tunnetuin ja arvostetuin.
Kyseessä on tietenkin kansallissäveltäjämme
Johan Christian Julius Sibelius, tunnetummin Jean Sibelius, joka syntyi 8.12.1865
kaupunginlääkäri Christian Gustaf Sibeliuksen ja Maria Charlotta
Sibeliuksen, o.s. Borgin, kolmilapsisen perheen ensimmäiseksi pojaksi. Hämeenlinnassa
Sibelius asui 20-vuotiaaksi asti kouluja käyden ja musiikista kiinnostuen.
Lapsuus lyhyesti
Ennen varsinaista säveltäjän uraansa Sibelius soitti ahkerasti
Sibelius, muiden
joukossa, oli heitä kuulemassa ja vaikutteita imemässä. Moninainen ahertelu
musiikin parissa herätti hänessä luomishalun, josta on päässyt myöhemmin
nauttimaan koko maailma.
Luonnon lumoissa

Alueella
vierähtää helposti pidempikin tovi, joten vierailijoiden kannattaa tutustua
vaikkapa Aulangon kylpylähotellin
tai leirintäalueen tarjoamiin
majoitusmahdollisuuksiin.
Alas Vanajaveden rannalle

Vaikka tähän asti on puhuttu erityisesti kesäisestä Hämeenlinnasta, riittää kaupungissa nähtävää vuoden ympäri.

//The city of Hämeenlinna has always had a lively culture. We have a medieval castle, many museums and talented athletes. Hämeenlinna is also a home and a birthplace for many famous artists and this year, perhaps the greatest of them all, would celebrate his 150th birthday, if still lived. But do you know, who are we talking about?
Clue number 1: There were minus 17 degrees Celsius on his birthday.

Clue number 3: He is Finland’s most respected and well-known composer.
The correct answer is Finland’s national composer Johan Christian Julius Sibelius, better
known as Jean Sibelius, who was born
8.12.1865. His father, Christian
Gustaf Sibelius, was the city doctor of Hämeenlinna and his mother was Maria
Charlotta Sibelius (nee Borg). Jean Sibelius had an older sister and a younger
brother.
Childhood
Jean Sibelius’ father died of typhoid fever
when the boy was only three years old. The father was heavily in debt and
because of that his widow and children were forced to move in with Catharina
Borg, Maria Sibelius’ mother and children’s grandmother. During the following
years they had to move many more times. Here you can see how the homes
were located in Hämeenlinna.
Jean Sibelius did not like the school at all
but he had an extremely vivid imagination. During the lessons he used to get
absorbed in his own thoughts and as a punishment for that his teacher made him
sit under her table. As you can guess, Sibelius sat there a lot. Vivid
imagination, susceptible senses and ability to empathize with what he saw
shaped the way how Sibelius made his compositions.
Before turning into a full-time composer
Sibelius used to play piano and violin. The
railroad which was built between
Helsinki, the capital of Finland, and Hämeenlinna brought world stars and
major names of music to perform in his home town. This young boy was privileged
to go and enjoy their playing. The desire to create music had started.
Enthralled by Nature
To Jean Sibelius nature was an important source
of inspiration and creativity. Back then the
Aulanko nature park near the Hämeenlinna downtown was a popular destination
with groups for picnic trips. Nowadays it is still the place to go for many
hikers, visitors and tourists. The view down to the Valley of Lake Vanajavesi
from the top of the Aulankovuori Hill is one
of the Finland’s national landscapes.
The forest with its trees, animals and plants
represented freedom to Sibelius. It was the place where he used to go and
improvise with his violin. The Spruce is one of his compositions
dedicated to nature in which you can hear every branch and needle of the tree.
If Sibelius still lived, he could now sit by the pond in the forest and observe
the moves and sounds of a swan couple
Aino and Janne, creatively named after the composer and his wife. When in
Aulanko I recommend to visit the Aulanko
Observation Tower from which you will see the entire beauty.
Besides the nature there are a lot to do and
see in Aulanko. You can play golf,
tennis or go horseback riding,
just to mention a few. In Aulanko time really flies and you may want to have a
good night’s sleep in a Spa Hotel or
in a camping area.
Down to the Shore of Lake Vanajavesi
The water was also a precious element to
Sibelius. Come down from the top of the Aulankovuori Hill and continue your way
to the downtown Hämeenlinna following the shores of a Lake Vanajavesi. On your way you may rest your feet on a gazebo
like pavilion, take breathtaking pictures of Häme Castle and Linnanniemi cape and see how the birches bend over
the Lake Vanajavesi. Listen how The Birch inspired Sibelius’
compositions.
In summer you can arrive to Hämeenlinna by boat
or let the shipping company Suomen Hopealinja
to do the navigation. Meanwhile you may enjoy the tasty food of the ship’s
restaurant and see the manors, churches and ridges in the horizon. In June
there will be Vanajavesi Sävelin
Cruise where Sibelius’ music will be played.
All Year Round
Although many of the sights and destinations
are at best especially in summer, Hämeenlinna city has something to see and do
for all the days of the year. Jean
Sibelius’ Birthplace is open every day until the end of the year 2015. Newly
restored park, named after the composer, and Jean Sibelius statue can be found right from the center. Hämeenlinna Church, in which Sibelius
and his family used to go, is only a couple hundred meters from the park. A
little further away is the Old Cemetery and Ahvenisto Cemetery to which some of
the Jean Sibelius’ relatives are buried.
And all this is just the surface of what this
great city has to offer.
